Get Your Guide To Digital Picture-Taking

You know we talk about stepping up and organizing a pro style Model photo-shoot, but unless you work out a plan of action and make a start, nothing gonna happen anytime soon!

Photograph a Teen Model - Pink Bikini

So what should you do first: Well let's asume besides having a Digital SLR Camera, you also have a Teen Model sorted, now some serious planning in advance for your photo-shoot is required. By that I mean working out where you will be shooting the pictures on location, or working out the requirements for a studio shoot and digital camera equipment you will need.

It's more than lightly that your first choice will be on location and possibly a favourite beauty spot, or down by the river, or on a beach for example.

It is also important to visit your location a day or two before the event and around the same time of day you propose to take your pictures, so as to get a clear mental image in your mind of the site, carefully selecting the backgrounds and noting the lighting conditions.

By lighting conditions I mean the position of the sun at the time of day that you will be photographing your model. Did you know that the best time of day for a location photo-shoot is 2-3 hours before sunset or 2-3 hours after sunrise. This is because the sun is low in the sky giving long shadows and the light is soft and warm. Most professional photographers shoot their location fashion photography work around these hours.

Try to position your model so the sun clips the side of her and that it's not directly on the front, or from behind her. You may want to review some ideas for posing your model and see if you can imitate other more experienced photographers. Also check out this page for posing ideas.

You will need a separate flash gun as a flash-fill, such as the Metz 45 CL - 4 "hammer head", or one of the cameras dedicated 'speed light' flash units and use this at a ratio of 1-2. Do not try to use the cameras built in flash as it's just not powerful enough for a professional photo-shoot.

What does a "ratio of 1-2" mean: Lets take at look at an example, if you camera is telling you that you need an exposure of 125/second at an aperture of f.8, your separate flash should be set on "Auto" at f.5.6, this will instruct the flash to reduce the power output, so as not to burn out the subject. If however, you set the power of the flash to the same as the cameras f. stop setting, your images will look washed out and as they will be over exposed. For more information using fill-flash and other photo tips, it might be a good idea to visit this info page.

Other camera equipment you will need such as a zoom or additional lens, a lens hood, a tripod and a reflector, a camera case. It would be a sound idea to carry all this with you just in case you need it.

Why do you need a tripod I here you say, well it's unlikely you will need it in the height of Summer when your working in good light conditions, but remember your now shooting a pro photo set up, so act like a professional photographer and he always carries a tripod even if he only uses it occasionally, just keep it handy in the trunk of the car. A general guide line for using a tripod is:- a) If your camera exposures is 60/second or slower, b) You have the "shakes" from to much 'Vino' the night before! c) A static shot where your shooting from the same position or maybe your working in the shadow of a rock formation or a cave, etc. Always, always, always carry a tripod, it will help you when you least expect it...

Camera angles: Carefully select your camera angels and try to avoid shooting from eye level, unless you have good reason to do so, such as the pictures at the bottom of the page where the photographer was using the sea and sand as the background. If your Model is standing, then the correct height for the camera should be at your knee high. Use your lens at the semi telephoto end of the zoom, this will give a pleasant effect and will avoid the distortion you get by working in to close. It will also help to throw the background out of focus. You will notice that in many pro model photos, the background is out of focus.

Also try shooting from the ground and have the model sitting or lying on the ground. Compose your image carefully by moving in a little closer or zooming in and filling the camera frame, by doing this you pictures will immediately take on a professional look.
